Kolob Canyon Review

Volume 31: Returning to KCR for the second year, as Art Director I was able to oversee all the creative aspects of the journal design. Collaborating with staff, we decided the theme for the year would be “Things Are Not as They Appear.” This theme is carried throughout the work, utilizing collage and found objects as the source of imagery, pairing uncommon images and phrases to reframe the reader’s understanding. Additional unexpected elements include hand-drawn elements based on conspiracy theories, a custom typeface created with a receipt printer, and a fried egg on the cover. Additionally, we split the volume into two physical books, one of literature submissions and one of artwork, adding to the unexpected feel of the edition.

KCR Vol. 31 has received recognition in design competitions with Communication Arts, Design Competition Shortlist and the University & College Designers Association (UCDA), Design Award of Excellence. KCR Vol. 31 is also featured in the permanent collection of the UCDA.

Volume 30: Working with a team of designers, we determined the theme for the 2022 edition of KCR would be “Memento Mori.” Throughout this journal edition, the imagery crafted re-imagines a visual aesthetic based on this philosophical truth. As part of the design team, I was integral in determining the theme, choosing typography, crafting the layout, and creating the imagery seen throughout. The imagery I contributed to this journal was made using original photography and alternative handmade processes. Texture became a central tenet of the visual aesthetic for this journal edition. In creating these textures, I turned to physical media, utilizing paint, sandpaper, distressed dish towels, candles, fire, makeup, broken glass, and glue.
