A Heritage of Homemade
What makes you feel at home? My goal in creating this book was to translate a sense of belonging, comfort, and kinship that my family has accomplished through cooking. This project is a collection of stories, recipes, and photography from my family. Acting as designer and art director, in addition to fulfilling roles as photographer, author, editor, recipe development, and chef, I recruited a team to help bring this robust project to fruition. This project is truly a collection and collaboration of talent and perspectives. I was able to lead a team of co-authors, photography assistants, and contributors in the completion of this book.

I was able to lead a team of co-authors, photography assistants, and contributors in the completion of this book. In creating the uniquely comfortable aesthetic for this project, I applied media and techniques beyond the typical digital design, helping to lend itself to the feeling of an heirloom piece. I had the opportunity to style and shoot all of my food photography, giving me complete control over the book’s visual language. In this 370-page book, you will find a wide array of found objects, family photos, family heirlooms, food splatters, crayon illustrations, and other visual elements that lend themselves to the feeling of this piece being passed down, cataloging A Heritage of Homemade.
The final deliverables for this project included an 8 in. x 10 in. book and an exhibit that was included in the Senior BFA Exhibition at the Southern Utah Museum of Art. The exhibit showcased excerpts from the book in a salon-style gallery wall, recipe cards for visitors to take with them, and a bookshelf that was crafted specifically for the exhibit.
